"Every single one of our actions and words helps to form the adults our children grow up to be." Anon.

"It is a mistake to try to impose (religious beliefs) on children, and to make them the basis of moral training. The moral education of children is much too important a matter to build on such foundations..." Margaret Knight, humanist academic, 1955.

Baby namings

We organise and lead personal and dignified ceremonies for those who wish to bring up their child with the freedom to make their own decisions about what they believe in later life. The ceremony formally names and welcomes the child into the family and expresses hopes for its future.

Naming ceremonies can take place in the familiar surroundings of the home or, indeed, anywhere else.

Local Celebrants

Lichfield: Valerie Wood (01543 264479)

Nantwich: Jan Ferguson 01270 626868

Stafford: June Williams (01785 212591).

Tamworth: Geraldine Jones (01827 67050)

Telford: Sue Falder (01952 604189)

The role of the celebrant

He or she discusses with the parent(s) the sort of ceremony. After an initial meeting the celebrant collates the information, prepares a script and presents the ceremony on the day. Contact by phone, post or e-mail during the weeks between the meeting and the ceremony ensure the ceremony meets the wishes of all concerned. Sample scripts may be available to help the parent(s) choose or compose the details, including the promises they mightl want to make to their child. The family is offered a copy of the script and, if previously agreed, a certificate to mark the occasion. Details of expert calligraphers may be available.

We do not call people 'god parents' but use other terms for this important role, such as Special Friends, Supporting Adults, Mentors or Honorary Parents. The celebrant will encourage the inclusion of their promises and hopes for the child’s future.

The current fee for organising and conducting a baby naming ceremony is around £140.

A leaflet and a booklet 'New Arrivals' are available from the British Humanist Association on 020 7079 3580 or by e-mailing: info@humanism.org.uk.
