International links

In 2005 our SCANS Humanist group decided to explore the possibility of establishing links with Humanist groups in other countries.

The initial objective was to find a kindred group in Northern Europe. This has proved to be more difficult than imagined, though we have exchanged e-mails with the Norwegian Humanists.

If you are a member of a Humanist group in another country and would like to explore linking with us then please e-mail: info@humanists.org.uk.

Two of our members, Chris and Tricia Budd, proposed that the group should also try to connect with Humanists working in a less privileged setting. It was hoped that this would give our group an opportunity to share the challenges faced by others and perhaps offer our support.

A number of members had experience in Africa so we decided to make that the focus of our efforts. After some web searching and fruitless e-mails we eventually began a series of interesting e-mail exchanges with the Uganda Humanist Association (UHASSO) led by Deo Ssekitooleko.

The Uganda Humanists are a small energetic group with an impressive range of activities. In 2004 they hosted, in Kampala, the World Congress of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU). As a result of that meeting they established strong links with the Norwegian Humanists who are supporting UHASSO's Humanist Volunteer Project. They also made contact with the North-East Humanists, through Barry and Jean Berkley, who have been collaborating with UHASSO in a number of ways.
